Traffic Details: Least Unpopular Australian Leftoid Blogs

In case you missed it, bloggers from around Australia met up on Saturday night for Grogblogging III. And yes, they’re just as opinionated in person as they are on screen.
Flashman from Electron Soup was chatting with Jozef Imrich of Media Dragon when I arrived. Pretty soon we were joined by Antony Carr — guest blogger at Evil Pundit, Club Troppo’s Nicholas Gruen and Stephen Hill, Agent FareEvader, Glen Fuller (Disambiguation Blog), Suki of Suki has an Opinion, and Tim Blair’s nemesis, Tim Lambert of Deltoid.
Catallaxy’s Jason Soon arrived early but was turned away by the RSL’s bouncer — no photo ID, no entry. I’m told that Jason’s response was the highlight of the evening and I’m sorry I missed it. Fortunately Jason doesn’t live far away and was able to go home for his passport.
LP’s Mark Bahnisch was there, along with Naomi. Liam Hogan from Stouch.net arrived complete with his trademark beret (but RSL rules prevented him from wearing it). Andrew Bartlett also came along and was as engaging in person as he is online.

Dear Nigerian Friend,

I am a former general in the Czechoslovak army who has managed to steal countless millions from my people. It has come to my attention that you are an investing genius and I would like your help establishing an account at a U.S. bank.

To start with, you need to know that Jozef Imrich's memoirs COLD RIVER: The Cold Truth of Freedom was published in December 2005 and is getting a big promo push from The British ABCTales Network, which has posted links to his book at their site:

Kindness of Strangers

This is important, because I need you to buy 17,800 copies of the book. In return, if you give me your checking account number, your credit card number, and your social security number, I will wire you $122,000 as "reimbursement" for the purchase of this splendid book.

We will all be winners, especially you my dear, dear friend.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

General Jozef Imrich

I am breathing easier this morning, as I’ve just learned that I’m going to live to the ripe old age of 106. This handy bit of information comes from How Long Will I Live?
Last year I came *this* close to not believing in living or miracles. Before we fall in love, we know what qualities we are looking for in a lover—or think we do. . . . Once we have fallen in love, it is a different story. When we are pressed to explain why we love our lover, we usually have little to say except what Montaigne says: Because she's she; because I'm me. When it comes to explaining why we love, we are all tongue-tied. . . . Loved beings—like great works of art—resist paraphrase. Love, as a result, seems somehow groundless—and so somehow blind.
God almighty, I'm going to get drunk and be somebody Yeah, yeah, yeah... If You Blog It, Grog It ;-)

With book sales flat, authors find creative ways to pitch their offerings. It seems book publishers are getting more comfortable with the Internet! It’s one thing to be published on Amazon. It’s another to be profiled in local papers ;-P

J.A. (JOE) KONRATH HAD NINE comic thriller novels rejected by publishers. In peddling the tenth, he scored a low six-figure advance for three books from publisher Hyperion in 2003. But with U.S. publishing houses reluctant to promote any but the most promising among the 180,000 titles released each year, Konrath feared his offerings would be overlooked.

It is not every week that I invade the Catholic church headquarters and get to hear soulful stories boldly told by Johno Johnson, national (and catholic) treasure and ubiquitous raffle fundraiser extraordinaire.
Johno Johnson has been chairman of the board of The Catholic Weekly since March 2003, is President Emeritus of the NSW Legislative Council, having served as its president from November 7, 1978 to July 3, 1991 and in 1990 invited Jozef Imrich to sit next to Alexander Dubcek during a liquid luncheon at the Presidential dining suit. He was an MLC for 26 years. He sits on a number of boards of community and other entities (including NSW Lotteries). Johno is a parishioner of Our Lady of Annunciation, Pagewood, and a member of the Australian board of Aid to the Church in Need. He is State treasurer of the NSW Branch of the Australian Labor Party. He and his wife Pauline (aka Christine) have two sons and two daughters, plus 10 grandchildren.

Bleeding Hands

I can't believe that my holidays are at an end, I have read as much poetry as I could and listen to as many songs as time allowed and watched as many flicks as my eyes could absorb. Gabbie you are a champion for swimming at Tamarama, and running along Bondi beach, taking the costal walks and listening to my musings. Alex I trust that we get to do more things together too this year. Like representing one country or another at the Icebergs on Australia Day. Most of all, I am enriched as I discover each week amazing local artists & creative human beings. Like MJR, I am humbled by being published: I want to drop to my knees and thank the muses and the gods that I am even published at all when I see how many books there are I also think of Elie Wiesel's statement ...to remain silent and indifferent is the greatest sin of all

The wound in my heart
Leaves me tired & weary
Invisible hands try to slow me down
And yet, I keep running
From the monsters within me
They're trying so hard to break out
And I'm falling, falling
Taste the dirt on the ground
Walls growing up all around me
And all I get is bleeding hands

The blood is tainted with poison
From somewhere deep inside my soul
The demons, they are all around me
I've painted the colour of my own destiny
I have forgotten
Those who have loved me
They disappeared so long ago
When I turned my back on their crying eyes
Couldn't look at their frowning faces
And know they saw through my lies

Got caught up in a web of deceit and lies
Now I'm facing the consequence of my sin
There's no one around who can save me now
Left here alone by myself to die
fallen, I've fallen
Tasted dirt from the ground
Walls grew up all around me
I tried and I tried
But all I got was bleeding hands

Art of Living & Literature Across Frontiers: Growing Sense of Inevitability: Have I got a story for you!
The work of James Frey takes readers for one hell of a ride, in more ways than one. It used to be said that everyone had a novel in them. Just now, though, you would probably be obliged to doubt the basic proposition: what everyone has in them these days is not a novel but a memoir.

What a bad, sad boy he was. A drug-addicted, alcohol-embalmed criminal, wanted in three American states. Hopelessly unpopular in school; the new kid in town wrongly held responsible for the horrific death of the only friend he made.

Up till now I had relied as an actor on my small store of sophistication and assurance, and had got nowhere. Only now when I was making use of the most vulnerable and naked aspects of myself had I come up with something of real value. I began to see that notwithstanding its occasional triumphs, its conspicuously public success, there was at the heart of an actor's life an aspect of public confession, something perplexed and even grieving.
-Michael Blakemore, Arguments with England: A Memoir (courtesy of Chris Hartman)

Recently, a young aspiring writer I know asked me if I would critique a story he'd written. Now, this is always a little dangerous, because you always run the risk of either giving too much or too little advice to be useful. When does a brilliantly crafted sentence lift the story above the banal, and when does it drag the pace into the mud? Care less about what we write than how we write it. Panic after a first successful novel is perfectly natural, but what if it never passes?

Second-novel syndrome (SNS), the so-called performance anxiety writers undergo after a first-up success, is as old as the novel itself.
Cervantes was so stricken by the miserable prospect of life after Don Quixote that he just kept writing his novel, so that Don Quixote is, in effect, his first, second and third novels (and fourth and diary and commentary and notebook). Keen-eyed literary historians will note that Cervantes had published an earlier book, La Galatea, 20 years before Don Quixote - which only underscores the point. If first novels are the golden children, second novels are the little monsters.

This 102 year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably coifed and face shaved perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on his window.
"I love it," he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.
"Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait."
"That doesn't have anything to do with it," he replied.
"Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged ... it's how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. "It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've stored away. Just for this time in my life. Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you've put in. So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories. Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank. I am still depositing.

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.
3. Live simply.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less.

Don't ask what the world needs.
Ask what makes you come alive and go do it.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.
-Howard Thurman

I came alive on Saturday night, last night (first night), with Lauren at the Iceberg club. What a great place to share stories with Ken Spears, Keith Posha Leslie, Ron Lofty Petrie, David Hall, Bruce Bailey, Brat Payne, Angus Graham, Alan Gow, Mike Malley, Terry McGee and so on ... Some of the stories stretch back to depression years of 1929. Some represent family dynasties three generations of Icebergs such as Gow and Graham. Posha makes a great point in a book that every child in Australia should read Bondi Icebergs: An Australian Icon.' When people find out you are an Iceberg the most common question they ask is 'Why do you do it? I like to reply, 'Why don't you do it? You are more than welcome to join us ... You can tell what people are thinking - It is too dam cold for swimming or They are bloody idiots! Small but determined group achieve the minimum 75 swims over 5 seasons. These people are the real ICEBERGS
Through my book I like to spread the word about unusual and less well known things about the Slavic traditions. As a child, I found old tales and obscure traditions fascinating. To be a swimmer at the Iceberg at Bondi is a great honour just as it was a great priviledge back in the Central European High Tatra Mountains to be part of the folkloric jouney as a dancer, singer, whistler at Tatranka folkloric group.
Swirly girl’s journey as an artist has been like a trek through a jungle - beautiful, exotic, and frightening at times. Some days are peaceful and full of light, other days feel like nothing but a series of slips and stumbles. Peculiar sights, sounds and creatures have kept me company as I have wandered through strange lands with no map or compass. I am still on this journey, and it continues to take me to fascinating places. Come take a walk with me Smith wins Whitbread novel prize

Just as much I hated the Iron Curtain 25 or so years ago, these days instead I love another iron and with the same intensity, the Sydney Iron Bridge The bridge's heart takes shape.

The bridge's heart takes shape.
The Image tells thousand stories: The Story of My Foolish Love in Exile

In these crazy times, we have to keep our eyes on the things that matter most: the life and health of our families, our communities, the planet. And to keep our sanity, some of us need to reserve a bit of time for reading and for writing. It is said that writers are people who, as children, did not receive sufficient rejection either from adults or peers and so are compelled to seek it relentlessly in later life. Today I knocked on a door marked 3 Hall Street Bondi and Rita Nash of Martin Smith’s Booshop embraced the idea of placing a few copies of Cold River on the shelf of the local bookshop ;-) Hope is itself a species of happiness, and, perhaps, the chief happiness which this world affords ;-)

Our greatest glory consists not in never falling, but in rising every time we may fall from the Iron Bridge ... But, let’s link to happiness ... and sex An Infinite Lives. An Infinite Deaths

Someone to hold you too close,

Someone to sit in your chair,
To ruin your sleep.
Someone to need you too much,
Someone to know you too well,
Someone to pull you up short,
To put you through hell.
Someone you have to let in,
Someone whose feelings you spare,
Someone who, like it or not,
Will want you to share
A little, a lot.
Someone to crowd you with love,
Someone to force you to care,
Someone to make you come through,
Who’ll always be there,
As frightened as you
Of being alive.

Sydney ushered in the new year with a huge heart pulsing on the Iron Bridge and within that heart are hearts of my soulful girls. Thank you Sydney for staging such a hearty firework. Christopher with Lidia have found the best spot at Rose Bay to watch the amazing colour of light The Greatest Heart
As the smoke clears on yet another midnight fireworks display, today is as good a time as any to take a long, hard look at ourselves in the mirror. I was also a great day to listen to Icerberg stories. Lotfy, Timmy, Nick, Dezza, Dave, Marcus and Ian were at their finest on the New Year Day. Eva from Brno pulled the hearties heads on those cold beers - miracle hangover cure! At the Iceberg, members are increasingly concerned with the meaning of their lives. When we were deprived of comfort we thought if only we had radios and irons and washing mashines, life would be perfect. Now that we have that, we are saying ‘Wait a minute - what is life all about?’ What am I doing all of this stuff for? We are much more focused on immaterial aspects of life .... In 2005 we were short of time not money ... Lets make the time in 2006 a priority. Time for family and friends. Time to swim across the bay. Time to share stories Ready to face a brand new love life

Edith Grossman, translator of the new version of Don Quixote, and Mayra Montero, author of Deep Purple and Son de Almendra, discuss their work at the Washington Post.
Montero : I am not interested in sex for its own sake in my writing. Only two of my nine books are truly erotic. Even when I decide to write about sexuality, even in its more crude variations, I always have a safety valve. Curiously, maybe it's because of my education -- very Catholic, with lots of nuns -- I tend to soften the sex with a substantial dose of humor.
Grossman : No one can write about human beings truthfully and leave sexuality out of the picture. I think people are struck by women who write about sexuality, and so perhaps the erotic characteristics or moments in your books stay in people's minds more than if a man were writing the novel. Art of Living & Literature Across Frontiers: Is Documentary the New Memoir?
What is the larger social context in which the story unfolds? Does the story tell me something about anyone or anything other than you? If not, you had better be pretty damn fascinating

I am a sociologist who conducts historical research on race and social policy, so my work has something in common with a documentary filmmaker’s attempt to uncover some version of “the truth” (however defined). Maybe this is just my sociological training leaking out, but when I watch a documentary—especially a highly personal, idiosyncratic one—I want to see the bigger picture as well.
